Earlobe Repair East Brunswick NJ

ear lobe repair, east brunswick njEarlobe surgery is performed to repair earlobes that have been torn by earrings or trauma, or that have been intentionally stretched through certain types of body piercing known as gauging. It is not the same as ear pinning (otoplasty), which is performed to correct protruding or misshapen ears. The earlobe is composed of skin and fat, which is why it is more prone to tears than the thick, heavy cartilage found mostly on the upper part of your ear. We invite you to make an appointment with Dr. George Smith by contacting one of our offices with locations in New York and New Jersey.

What Can Cause a Ripped Earlobe?

There are several instances that may result in a torn earlobe. Sometimes earlobe tears occur because your ears were pierced too low to begin with. Other earlobe problems include droopy or stretched-out earlobes, which also occur from the pull of heavy earrings. This can also include ear gauges as well.

How Long Does Earlobe Surgery Last?

Earlobe surgery takes about 30 minutes and is usually done with local anesthesia in an office-based setting. There may be some minimal discomfort after your procedure, which can be treated with over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication.

When Can I Pierce My Ear Again?

You will be able to pierce your earlobes within 4-6 weeks from the date of the repair. We recommend that you do not re-pierce in the same spot of the original piercing or along the suture repair line. Choose lightweight or stud earrings instead of big hoops. Also, remove large, bright earrings when you are around kids, as young children may be tempted to grab and pull on them. This will help decrease the chances of your earlobe tearing again.
