How to Properly Care for Your Nose After Rhinoplasty

If you have decide that it’s time to either change the appearance of your nose or change how you breathe, then a rhinoplasty is the perfect solution for you. However, with the thought of undergoing any type of surgery comes some amount of anxiety about what the surgery itself will be like and the recovery process. Read on to learn more about how to properly care for your nose after rhinoplasty.

  1. Avoid Swimming

You’ve more than likely experienced the sensation that ensues when you get water up your nose while diving or jumping into a swimming pool. While your nose is properly trying to recover from surgery, avoid swimming for at least a few weeks up to a month after surgery. Not only can the pressure from jumping or diving into the pool cause your nose an undue amount of pressure but the chlorine isn’t necessarily good for the healing process either.

  1. Properly Change Bandages

Right after your nose surgery, you will have bandages both inside and outside of your nose. In order for you to avoid infection and to ensure that your nose heals properly, make sure to follow your surgeon’s orders and properly change the bandages as directed— paying close attention to putting only clean bandages back in your nose after you take out old ones.

  1. Be Gentle

Although a week or so after surgery you might feel like your normal self again, remember that your nose is still healing and will be for a while. As a good rule of thumb, be as gentle as you can with your nose during this time. For instance, try the following things:

  1. Avoid wearing glasses for at least four weeks after your surgery.
  2. Avoid blowing your nose for a few weeks after surgery.
  3. Be careful when putting clothes on over your head.
  4. Avoid strenuous exercise or contact sports for at least a month after surgery.
