How to Recover from Breast Augmentation

Following any kind of surgical procedure, it’s important to follow your aftercare instructions for the best results and to feel comfortable and healthy post-operation. Here are some of the key things to keep in mind for a quick and happy recovery process following your breast augmentation procedure.

Get Plenty of Rest and Sleep

This may seem obvious, but make sure you have a comfortable and relaxing place to recover and sleep. This might mean plenty of pillows and blankets as well as books, magazines, DVDs, and whatever else you’d like to pass the time with. You’ll be able to walk following your procedure but let your body heal so you can regain your strength by taking it easy.

Manage Your Pain Responsibly

You will be given specific instructions about medications you need to take for pain management but also for reducing the risk of infection. Follow those instructions and do not take more than you’ve been prescribed. You may not need anything stronger than over-the-counter pain medication after the first post-op day. To be prepared though, fill your doctor’s prescriptions prior to the day of your breast augmentation that way, if you need them, they’ll be easily accessible.

Do Not Over-exert Yourself

It’s normal to experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Your plastic surgeon will let you know when you are cleared to enjoy exercise and normal activity again. Over time, your post-surgical swelling will decrease. It’s important that your incisions are not subjected to abrasion, motion, or excessive force while you’re healing.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

While recovery from breast augmentation surgery isn’t terribly difficult, it still is major surgery. For the first few days, you will be tired and sore and in need of rest. You should also not be lifting anything heavy (including children under 20 pounds) for the next six weeks. You also will not be allowed to drive until you are finished with your narcotic pain medication. It is advised that you have household help during your recovery period, especially for the first 24 to 72 hours following surgery. Even something as simple as having a friend come over each day to check on you should help the recovery process, physically and mentally.
