How to Recover from Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia Surgery East Brunswick NJHaving Man boobs isn’t exactly something most men want to claim. However, it’s a condition called gynecomastia that affects about 65 percent of middle-aged men. Caused by changes in hormones either due to puberty, steroids, or aging, gynecomastia sometimes goes away on its own and sometimes needs surgery from a doctor like Dr. George Philip Smith.

If you have elected to get this surgery, one of the most important things you can do is learn about recovery and what you can expect.

Avoid Exercise

While you’re in recovery, we recommend that you avoid exercise for at least a couple of weeks— especially exercises that involve your arms and chest. Although you can do mild exercises like go on small walks, try to refrain from strenuous exercises or exercises that involve things like bench pressing.

Wear Your Compression Garment

After you leave our office, your chest will either be wrapped in a compression garment or bandages. Make sure that you leave those on your chest for the allotted amount of time that we give you. Your garment will not only help ensure that your incisions stay in place, but it will help with swelling as well.

Listen to Your Body

One of the best things you can do when you’re recovering from any type of surgery is to listen to your body. If you feel too sore or in too much pain even after a couple of weeks of surgery, maybe you need to take it easy. Listening to your body is the best way to avoid injury and to stop an infection from getting worse.
