How to Treat Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Staten IslandIf you’re like the majority of people who work in an office, you spend most of your days typing in front of a computer. And although you may think that because you are sitting down all day that you may not be causing your body any harm, typing can cause carpal tunnel. As a condition that causes tingling, weakness, numbness, and pain in your hand, carpal tunnel can make everyday tasks, like typing, become painful and almost impossible. Luckily, here at George Philip Smith’s office, we specialize in hand and tendon surgery to help you get rid of your carpal tunnel and start feeling like yourself again. Until you can come into our office for surgery, however, we have created a brief guide including a few simple things you can do to alleviate the pain from carpal tunnel. Read on to learn more.

Wear a Wrist Brace

Because you likely can’t quit your job because of sore wrists, you need to make sure that you stay as comfortable as possible while doing things like typing. We encourage our patients to wear a specialized wrist brace that will take the pressure off of the wrist— in turn, alleviating the discomfort in your hands.

Ice It

One of the leading symptoms of carpal tunnel is extreme swelling in the hand and wrist. To help you reduce the inflammation and stay more comfortable, try icing your hand and wrist every night before bed— this will help prevent further injury while making you feel more at ease.

Do Stretches

Stretching isn’t just something you should do after you go on a run. In fact, one of the best things you can do for your hand and wrist if you have carpal tunnel is to do stretches a few times a day. You can do simple stretches like rotating your wrist, or pulling back on your fingers— each of these will help loosen up the muscle and give you much-needed relief.
