What can I expect during breast augmentation surgery?

Breast Augmentation East Brunswick, NJThere are a number of reasons why a woman would be dissatisfied with her breasts. Pregnancy or weight loss may have caused the breasts to lose volume and sag. One breast may be larger than the other. Or the breasts are unusually small or never fully developed. No matter what the reason, breast augmentation surgery can be life-changing. More than 300,000 breast augmentation surgeries are performed each year in the United States, making it the most common cosmetic surgical procedure. Here is what you can expect during surgery:

Administering anesthesia

Your surgeon will recommend whether intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is the best for you and your comfort during surgery.

Making the incision

Incisions vary depending on the type of breast implant used, the size desired and your anatomy. Incision options include a periareolar incision, which is along the edge of each areola; the inframammary incision, which is the crease under the breast; and the transaxillary incision, which is made in the armpit. Your surgeon will do what he can to make sure incisions are made in the most inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring.

Inserting the implant

The selected breast implant will be inserted through the incision either under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue and over the pectoral method. The placement location for the implant depends on the type of implant, the degree of breast enlargement and your body type. If you choose a silicone gel implant, the size is pre-determined. If you choose a saline implant, the implant will be filled at this time until it reaches the desired size.

Closing the incisions

Sutures will be layered within the breast tissue, and to close the incisions, sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape will be used to close the skin. Your results will be immediately visible, even with the swelling that subsides as you heal.
