What happens during a breast lift procedure?

Over time, breasts will sag and droop as a result of aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding and significant weight loss. If your breasts have lost their shape and firmness and you are ready to restore youthfulness, then a breast lift may be right for you.

Here’s what happens during this surgery:

Breast lift surgery is not “one size fits all.” During your consultation and prior to surgery, you and your surgeon will discuss and determine the appropriate technique based on your breast size and shape, the size and position of your areolae, degree of sagging and skin quality and elasticity.

Comfort and safety are key. Patients either have intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for their options for medications that are administered to provide comfort during surgery.

Your surgeon will use one of three incision patterns. One incision type is around each areola, which then helps hide the scar. Another incision shape is lollipop-like, which means the incision is made around each areola and vertically down to the breast crease. The third incision type is more like an anchor shape, which consists of encircling each areola, running vertically down to the breast crease and then horizontally along the crease.

Once the incisions are made, the surgeon reshapes the breasts. Underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped. The nipples and areolae are repositioned for a more youthful appearance. Enlarged areolae are reduced in size, if necessary. Excess skin is removed to help with the loss of elasticity.

Sutures within the breast tissue will help support the newly shaped breasts. These are layered deep within the tissue. Once the breasts are reshaped and skin is tightened and removed, sutures, skin adhesives or surgical tape are used to close the incisions.

Scars may be visible but will fade significantly over time. Incision lines are designed to be concealed as much as possible. Some lines will still be visible, but patients notice they improve over time.

Results are immediately visible. As the swelling subsides during recovery, the final shape becomes more apparent as incision lines begin to fade.
