What to expect from eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) East Brunswick NJAs men and women age, our eyes start to show tend to show the effects of aging first. If your puffy, baggy eyes are making you look tired, sad or older, then eyelid surgery may help restore a more youthful, refreshed look to your face. Here is what you can expect from eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty:

There are two types of eyelid surgery – upper and lower blepharoplasty. Depending on your concerns and desired outcome, you can have both done together or separately. Upper eyelid surgery consists of removing excess skin and removing and repositioning fat deposits from the upper eyelid and tightening muscles as needed. Lower eyelid surgery involves removing the bags or fat pad and skin from the lower lid to reduce puffiness and wrinkling beneath the eyes.

Incision lines are made in natural lines and creases so scars can be hidden. For upper eyelid surgery, the incisions are made within the natural crease of the eyelid. For lower lid surgery, incisions are made at or within the inside of the eyelid. Fine sutures close the incisions and minimize the visibility of the scar. These stitches will remain for only one week.

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure. Depending on the extent of your surgery and whether you are having both upper and lower eyelids done, the procedure can take 45 minutes to two hours.

Recovery is not very painful. You will have pain medication to take care of initial discomfort, and most patients are fine with over-the-counter medication. Once stitches are out one week after surgery, you will feel pretty much back to normal. You can even return to work in 3-5 days but should refrain from strenuous activity for 2-3 weeks. You may notice some residual swelling, but that will continue to subside over the next few weeks. You will be advised on how to protect your eyes in the sun over the next several months as you recover.

Eyelid surgery is one of the top five most performed cosmetic surgeries in the world because it delivers dramatic results with little downtime. If you’re interested in learning more about how to make your eyes look more “awake,” simply call (718) 608-1111 today for a consultation.
