Replacing Lost Volume with Juvederm
It’s easy to equate aging with wrinkling, and in some people, wrinkling can be the most visible sign of aging. But when you compare young and old, usually the most identifiable change comes in the loss of volume. As people age, the area under their cheekbones sink inward and flatten. Their lips thin, and even the area around the mouth becomes sunken. However, dermal fillers such as Juvéderm have been developed to address this volume loss and to fill wrinkles and creases on your face. At Smith Plastic Surgery, Dr. George Smith offers Juvéderm and its three products that address different areas of the face. What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm refers to a series of injectable dermal fillers that use a naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid. You can find hyaluronic acid in almost all animals, including humans. Hyaluronic acid is necessary to keep our skin hydrated and firm, in other words, young-looking. When injected beneath a wrinkle, the acid in Juvéderm binds with nearby water molecules to fill the area and hydrate and plump the skin. There are three different Juvéderm formulations, all of which we offer at Smith Plastic Surgery.
What are the different types of Juvederm Fillers?
Juvederm XC
As the skin loses elasticity and moisture, we can form relatively deep parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. You’ve also heard these called nasolabial folds. Juvederm XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
JuvedermVoluma XC
Over time as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvederm Voluma XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look.
Juvederm Ultra XC
You may not think about your lips with facial aging, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Others may not have lost volume, but never have been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvederm Ultra XC provides or returns fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips.
How does Juvederm Work?
Juvederm, like all dermal fillers, works by filling wrinkles, creases, or areas of decreased volume and pushing the skin back upward. The most popular dermal fillers use a hyaluronic acid-base, and they bind with water molecules. Dermal fillers are useful in treating volume loss and wrinkles that show themselves at all times, known as “static wrinkles.”
What other options are there for wrinkles?
Another option for wrinkle control is the neuromodulator. Botox is the most well-known neuromodulator and is one of the most notable brand names in the world. Unlike fillers, which “fill” the wrinkle, neuromodulators instead target the muscles that create wrinkles on the surface skin above them. These are called “dynamic wrinkles.”
